Kydoniai Torpedo Boat Wreck

The Greek torpedo boat Kydoniai, measuring 60.1 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width, was built in 1914 at the Italian shipyards of Monfalcone.
While en route to Souda Bay, the vessel put into Monemvasia, sailing alongside the passenger steamship Zakynthos.

On April 26, 1941, both vessels came under a heavy air attack by 12 German bomber aircraft during the German invasion of Greece. The Kydoniai was sunk almost immediately. Only two sailors were injured, as most of the crew had already disembarked and were ashore at the time of the attack.

Today, the wreck of the Kydoniai stands as a silent witness to the dramatic events of World War II. Resting beneath the surface, it forms part of the region’s rich underwater heritage—an evocative site where history, remembrance, and the sea converge.
